Hey guys,

I'm a beginner surfer on a Bic 7'3". I can stand up & turn and I'm really interested in getting a longboard. Which ones are good & is there anything I should watch out for? I'd like to be able to cross step and nose ride eventually.

Thanks laugh.gif

what sort of budget do you have, where are you based, where do you surf, is it just a noserider you want?

Your ideal learner longboard is 2nd hand, easy to catch waves with, and not to wide or heavy so that you cant carry it. One of your arms will stretch eventually opening up a whole new choice of board widths!. Once you are proficient with that then you should have a pretty good idea of what your looking for in your next board.

Your ideal learner longboard is 2nd hand,

thats it in a nutshell, someting in the region of E350 should be grand, nothing too expensive, but expensive enough to sell on with time and when your abilities have heightened and you need a change. longboardirl/hang loose.jpg

I'm up in Omagh (Tyrone) and mostly head to Bundoran to surf.

With budget, I was thinking of something under €600 but I'm keeping an open mind.

As I haven't actually been on a longboard, I'm not exactly sure what I want but I know that I love the gliding feeling of a bigger board and all the moves look cool longboardirl/smileslayer.gif

I think I'm in bother with anything bigger than my Bic! By the time I get to the water, my fingers are numb and I'm bent sideways! Maybe I should budget for a slave to carry my board......

jesus dont be making offers like that around here.............

re the board, I'm sure the surf shops in Bundoran would be able help you out. Theres also Mark Maguire and Legend who shape and you're not too far from Troggs and Andy will definitely help you out.

Yeah go 2nd hand, i couldnt wait to get rid of my beginners board and didnt listen to any advise and ran off and got a board that cost an arm and a leg and it is completely wasted on me....

you´ll get something very decent for well under 600.
and you can get arm extensions with the change laugh.gif laugh.gif

Would be interesting to see if a lot of longboarding does result in a longer arm. I always get my right hand further around my boards then my left.

I hope you’re not regretting buying that beautiful Fireball. You should be burned at the stake for that sort of talk. If you ever want to sell it ................... ph34r.gif I baggs frist refusal.

fozzie- 02-06-2008
i had some notion in my head that the minute i popped up on the fireball i would be carving, cross stepping and nose riding abd basically stylin it and that never materialised...once a shit surfer always a shit surfer rolleyes.gif the board makes no difference to my (lack of) performance rolleyes.gif it does look great though biggrin.gif

What do you reckon with long board versus magic carpet? How different are they?

herbie- 02-06-2008
you'll catch alot more waves on the longboard
