Legends Presentation Awards

Irish Surfing Association Newsletter

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 March, 2007 : - - Well if you werent there you missed a huge night in Irish Surfing. Tramore Surf Club hosted the first Irish surfing Legends dinner dance on Paddies night last. Under one roof, nearly 300 people gathered, with no less than five generations of Irish surfers brought together to share a combined history and knowledge of a sport that has grown in epic proportions since the early pioneering days of the 60s.

It was a formal event, looking more like the Oscars than anything else and for this Surfari the ladies were not left at home, indeed the girls showed up in force and all looked amazing. The night kicked off with a few words from Martin Cullinane (MC for the event) about mutual respect for each other in and out of the water, and the need to take time and encourage newer and younger surfers within our surfing community.

The real message for the night however, was how much we value and need our older silver surfers to be role models for the younger generations who may have lost the link to our surfing history - and to respect the ones that have paved the way for all of us.

Silver Surfari
This was followed by the launch of the Silver Surfari DVD where a 10-minute highlight was shown after some wonderful words by Naomi Britton (producer). And what a reception this documentary was given with everybody clearly enjoying every single moment of it with gasps and laughter(at the funny bits) filling the room!

After dinner it was down to the business end of the night -Irelands surfing hall of fame - and our inductees, of which there were three, were introduced with a quick bio accompanied by slide show presentation hilariously narrated by Ronan Breen.

The Legends!
The presentations were made by Michael Kelly (President I.S.A) and Liam Walsh (Chairman Tramore Surf Club). Both looking sharp on the night, only being out shone by the fresh Hawaiian Leis that were flown in that morning for our inductees! and special mention has to be given to the lovely ladies who presented them (Sile, Clare, Sam, Valerie, Jill, Edel, Rachel and the gorgeous Inga).

All of our inductees received standing ovations for their contribution to Irish Surfing, and were extremely honoured to receive their awards and humble in their speeches. David Smyth surfing since 76 pushing the boundaries of surf skiing in Ireland, building and designing Irelands first purpose built surf centre (T-Bay Surf Centre, Tramore)

Hugh O Brien Moran surfing since 66 for dominating Irish competitive surfing for so long but more so for being responsible for successive generations of Irish surfers taking up the wonderful Art of Surfing! Joe Roddy surfing since 49, Irelands first surfer. Need we say more! Credited with constructing and surfing the first board in Irish waters

Special Award
A special award was given to the clubs best student/athlete this went to Simon Moore for outstanding academic achievement, reflecting the importance that T-Bay Surf Club places on education, Simon is a student of C.B.S Tramore.

The club also thanked everyone for giving so generously to the fund set up on behalf of the lost fisherman on our coast recently and to Fr. Brian Power from Dunmore East for attending and giving his blessing. It was truly a national event with nearly all surf clubs represented, and indeed a historic occasion for surfing on our isle.

And one last thing. rumour has it that a number of people have already been short-listed for these ?Legends Awards? for next Year?..! Who are they Well, were told everyone will just have to wait!
