quads a broad catagory.... from this performance shape that my buddy rides:
to the twinzer that i ride:
to some of the long board quads that i have read about on sways....
the real question is what do you want out of the board...and why are you getting rid of the short boards? or are you just getting rid of thrusters?

Mainly to catch waves
Had a re-think boards wise lately. Long running trouble with my right shoulder(tendon keeps pulling it out of the socket...) means I not getting power into my paddling these days.
Fish I had surfed a dream on most waves I surfed but twas a bitch on some, this seems a good compromise.
Have just cashed in on two boards and hopefully the third will be gone later this week.
Should easily cover this one

well I think investing in surgy to stop yer arm from falling off might be a better option.... but if you want a mandala quad that is a good option... my buddy has one and really likes it.
you could also just get a thruster with a bit more girh to it and a little more of the foil forward if you really like the middle fin... the quad will give a reall loose feel in comparison to a thruster... the quad set up is not going to increase paddle power though.
if it is paddle power you might get more from a slightly bigger board than normal where the rocker is a bit more relaxed and the under the chest thickness increased a bit....

Quads schmods, theyre not going to help your shoulder. Consider something which rests your shoulder, its supposed to last a lifetime. How about a knee paddleable longboard ? This could also be a big wave style board. Or a mat, bodyboard, waveski or SUP. taking care of your body is the most important thing.
Problem is , the easier to catch waves, the more waves you'll go for, So your shoulder will not necessarily get a rest. In fact sometimes I find paddling a low volume shortboard the easiest to paddle.

If you have VHI, get your doctor to get you an appointment with Dr Jim Colville in the Blackrock clinic - let him look at it, he is Mr Shoulder in Ireland, and dont waste your time with any other chance his arm fuckwit orthopaedic surgeon in the country, who will take his fees, and probabaly leave a mess. After that, get the best physio you can find - probably your counties football or hurling physio (they will deffo have private rooms) - they arent the county physio because of pull, its because they're the best - do your exercises religously, and bobs yer uncle, your shoulders fine, and you can surf whatever board you want!

Thanks for advice on both counts, was going to check the doc's to be sure. Shoulder is responding to strength exercises but will get it checked out though, constant physio is a pain in the hole.
Regards the 6'4 quad, I found my overly large fish easy to paddle and catch with so was looking for something similar, that I could surf well backhand with

Seriously Rodent, whatever doc you are recommended, insist on Colville, everybody else knows a bit - he is the expert - do not waste your time elsewhere
