Does anyone have advice on which camera settings are more likely to provide a good quality picture, no doubt it varies slightly from camera to camera and lighting conditons, but there must be some generic ideal settings ?.

Sorry to get all photo-nerdy here.

Most cheap lenses are pretty soft when they're wide open, so you have to stop them down a bit to get a sharper shot.
I'd use f/8.0 on a cheap lens like the one I have and adjust the ISO so that I get a shutter speed of around 1/1250 or quicker. On a DSLR you don't really need to worry about going to ISO 800 as they still perform pretty well there.

If you get yourself a good DSLR with a good lens you can shoot wide open and still get pretty sharp shots. If I had a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 I'd be shooting at f/2.8 all the time. You could bump down the ISO and still get a respectable shutter speed with that lens.
Alas I don't have 1500 squids to spend on a lens though.

If you just want to snap away and aren't too bothered about Depth of Field or sharpness then just put it on Auto.

Myself and Herbie had discussed the possibility, but going up to a sponger and saying sponger might not go down to well!.
