Rossnowlagh Intercounties 2008
The Intercounties Surfing contest is Irelands longest-running Contest and has been run every year from 1967 till today. It has always been the last event of the year and is widely viewed as THE social event of the surfing calendar. The actual surfing which takes place often takes second place to the social and ’craic’ elements. In keeping with this theme it is the one contest where you will find contestants of all ages and abilities pitted against each other to defend their counties honour. Random spot prizes are awarded and the winners take home the perpetual Vinny Britton Cup and some locally commissioned surf inspired art work. All that people need to enter is three surfers and be willing to have a bit of fun!!
The intercounties are as well known for Barry Brittons stunning art work on the iconic posters which have accompanied the contest since its inception. His ink prints adorn many a sitting room throughout the surfing world and Barry has gone on to design posters for the prestigious Triple Crown and Pipeline Contests in Hawaii.
In the last decade the contest itself has turned into a tit-for-tat battle between the two dominant counties in Irish Surfing hailing from opposite ends of the country – Donegal and Waterford. In each of the last 10 years no county has managed to record back to back victories, with Waterford the current champions and Donegal looking to bring back the Vinny Britton cup to the North West. Other favourites this year include Mayo, a team which has been close to taking their first Intercountie title on a number of occasions in recent year and Sligo a dominate surfing county but with only one Intercounties title in almost forty years.
The contest will be hosted by Rossnowlagh Surf Club in conjunction with the Denny Irish Surfing Association. Entries will be taken at 9.00am Saturday 20th October with heats in the water by 10.00am. Entry fee €20 per team.
