This is good timing for this thread.  It has tempted me out of lurking in the corner.....
I'm heading to California in a month or so and was thinking along similar lines.  I also surf a 9'2 mostly and was looking at the quad fish.
Does anyone have any experience of the Gary Hanel boards?  They look nice on the Mollusk site.
Any shops along the coast with a good range of second hand boards?
Good luck with your search seamunki.

Guess you spoiled for choice longboardirl/smileslayer.gif

Thanks Rick,

Thanks mpb and rodent! I'm new to quads and shorter boards in general so I was hoping for something with a bit of float for easy paddling.
I'm 5'11 (and about 80kg) - would I be looking for something around 6'0 with good thickness?
If I could pick up a couple second hand I suppose it would give me a chance to experiment.......
Can't wait to get out there and start the search! biggrin.gif

I'm 6', and about 85kg.

My quad is 6'2 x 21' 1/4 x 2' 5/8 .

My fish is 5'11" and I think about 22" wide and just under 3" thick.

It does take time to adjust to paddling a much shorter board, but it does have its advantages.

Longboard grotto in Encinitas has a huge selection of 2nd hand boards, Pure Fun also in Encinitas is worth looking at, Icons of surf have a small selection at the back of the shop, Just Longboards in hermosa beach also had a huge amount of 2nd hand boards and Action Water Sports in Marnia del ray have a big 2nd hand stock. All these are on or just off highway 101 longboardirl/hang loose.jpg

Lads this is all very helpful - thanks a lot for the pointers. I'll be driving the coast from San Fran to San Diego so should get plenty of opportunities to get to these places.
seamunki - you might be right, I think I have my work cut out (though choosing boards is no chore;)

I've been guessing a bit at dimensions so far mpb so that gives me a good steer on what to look out for.
I'll let you know how I get on. longboardirl/hang loose.jpg

Another thing is, remeber that it wont cost more then 100 bucks to ship from west coast to east coast. If i was going to west coast to east coast I would hook up with Gary Hanel. He can make anything and his fish's are supposed to be unreal. Their are loads of great fish makers out there.

I enjoy my bear wombat 6'4". Its easy to paddle and quite fast and loose. I'm still not fully able to surf it (or even close for that matter) but I got it for the same reason you are talking about. I think it might be a good option for what you are looking for. I read that fish are quite technical boards in comparision.

I really like the idea of the Bear Wombat, I suppose its either that or a fish that i'd go for.

I'll definately check out Mollusk in Brooklyn, Jerseymike- are there any other shops you can recommend in the NYC area?

Anybody ever surf a Hess Pacheco Quad? It looks it'll last as well as surf like the b'jaysus longboardirl/surfing.gif ph34r.gif

How are you getting on with the Mandala Quad Rodent? Do you think a sub 6 footer would a bit too much to handle as a second board or would a twin fish be a better bet? unsure.gif
