Full Version : Glassing weights

So got myself a new 9'3'' back in November.
6oz glassing on the top and 4oz on the bottom.
Anyway after pretty regular use but not extreme use the deck is now fairly badly dented, particularly under my front foot zone, either side of the stringer.
Theres also some little semi-circular fractures just by the stringer.

So what I'm wondering is....
Is it normal to expect this so soon or could it be down to lack of quality?
I'm 13 stone / 80 kilos ish.

The crowd I got it off have a very reputable shaper but it's a different guy who does the glassing..........

What weight glassing do people on here normally get on their customs?

On my fireball it's 4oz top and bottom and then a 6oz patch over the fins......on mine the foam/glass has become compressed either side of the stringer just under where my back foot would be or where I push down on the back when I'm paddling through a wave...............I think this pretty much happens on all fibreglass boards, you see some shortboards that are literally squashed from use (Doylers laugh.gif )

Well whats disappointing for me is that the reason I asked for 6oz on the top is that the same thing happened my last board which had 4oz on the top.
Dunno, maybe next time I'll go for 2 layers of 6oz on top sad.gif

I think you might be wrong there, normally they are 6oz top and bottom and a 4oz fin patch.

My first fireball that I rode for 6 years or so is hanging up and its surface is pure ripples.

All foam boards pick up deck compression of some kind (except perhaps epoxy). Your not the lightest (i'm a bit heavier) and that does contribute towards this, along with technique (I have a couple of large compressions following wipe outs). Alternatively you can get a board with a lot of layers of glass, but this will ride very differently, more wight = more momentum = more glide but harder to turn.

If your board isnt taking in water and hasnt snapped then what are you worrying for?.

Get a Tyler the next time - my 305 has 6x10oz on the deck!

A HP longboard deck would normally be 2 layers 6+6 or 6+4.

A trad log would be at least 16oz (10+ 6 or 8 +8)

My noserider is 6+6+6 deck (3 layers being stronger than 2)

But the foam used is important in deck compressions also.

Normal foam is softer the closer you get to the core, so removing too much foam makes a deck soft.

The implications of this is that as most boards start off on a shaping machine too much foam can be removed if the blank isn't a very good match to the finished shape.

My noserider is high density 'Classic foam'. Between that and the glass job there isn't a single compression ding on the deck after 5 years.

Its a bugger to carry though, with all that weight, but surfs like you are floating on a cloud.

Sorry, I meant 2 x 6oz on the deck and 1 x 6oz on the bottom, and a 4oz fin patch.

Ah there's a 4 and a 6 in their somewhere wink.gif

Hmmm so by the sounds of it one layer of 6oz is actually a light glass job for a longboard, even a HP.

Mpb, I wouldnt say I was worried but if it goes the same way as my last board then the deck will sink so much that the glass will crack and it'll take in water.
Just a pain in the arse getting it fixed.

Board surfs great though and I'd like to go back to the same shaper for my next one. Guess I'll just get an extra layer then.

Oh yeah Burnsie, good explanation! longboardirl/cheers.gif
